In the early 1800s, the surviving Fleet registers were collected and brought together by members of the legal profession, clearly conscious of their potential historical importance. The registers were deposited at the Registry of the Bishop of London in 1821 on the order of the Home Office and were later presented to the General Register Office’s First Non-parochial Registers Commission. The Commission decided not to grant the Fleet registers the full authentication awarded to the main collection of Nonconformist registers, but instead they were to be transferred from the Registry into the General Register Office’s safe custody. They ultimately ended up in the care of The National Archives.
